Learn Rumba Tres Golpes with Joe "Papo" Daddiego
This conga lesson with Joe Daddiego was recorded May 2, 2001 in the Daddiego family's farmhouse on Pennsy Road near New Providence, Pennsylvania. We used the book "Conga Drumming: A Beginner's Guide to Playing with Time" by Alan Dworsky and Betsy Sansby. The ex had picked up a copy when we first started playing congas, and Papo had said it was good.
The lesson starts slowly but then builds as we "pick it up." Listen for Papo's amazing improvisation. Later in the recording you'll hear Papo playing an African djembe drum with jingling bells. The call he was teaching us was used when we performed with Imani Edu-tainers at the Fulton Opera House.
Thanks go to Ginny Daddiego for permission to broadcast these recordings, and for the photo of our group, the ABC Ensemble (below, left to right) Paul Montigny, Joe Daddiego, and yours truly playing bata drums, wearing masks we had made for a story-telling performance by Rich Humphreys at the Quarryville (Pennsylvania) Public Library in 2002. "ABC" stands for Afro-Brazilian-Cuban rhythms we played.

In the recording below from February 2001 Papo taught us the bottom part of rumba.
Below, Papo improvises on rumba while yours truly plays the cascara and the ex holds the bottom.
