And what a sweetheart he is! A native Pennsylvanian, born and raised in Lancaster County to boot.
Little Red is a Red Spruce from Go Native Tree Farm near Salunga.
Preserving and propagating Pennsylvania-native trees is great for many reasons, as the Go Native website says: "For example, less care is needed once established. Some species can grow 5' a year making a shade tree in little time, saving electric and offsetting hundreds of carbon emissions pounds."
Little Red ("Picea rubens" on his birth certificate) is about a year old and should grow at about one foot per year, topping out at 110 feet around the year 2121. The U.S. Department of Agriculture lists this species as endangered in New Jersey, and a species of special concern in Connecticut.
Welcome, Little Red!
