Last week I was a guest of Jon and Laura Spelbring, and rode a recumbent bike for the first time. It was great. We rode along the Mississippi River from the Confluence Tower to just north of Alton where we inspected the Piasa Bird (some prankster voyageur's New World joke on Father Jacques Marquette?).
Bike trails are plentiful in the region. Madison County Trails are superb for biking, especially recumbent bikes, with miles of wide, paved trails.
Below, an assembled glass collage by Cassandra Spelbring is admired by yours truly (used with permission).
Is it a jet rocket? No, it's the Mango Sport velomobile, an enclosed recumbent tricycle made by Sinner Bikes of Holland, driven by Jon Spelbring of Belleville, Illinois. (Click on the photo above to see the inner workings). Jon pedals this 60-pound beauty to work every day, 18 miles round-trip. Below are the side view, and the rear view (the bike has a detachable rear camera, not shown).
