On a rainy Saturday at the Stahr Performing Arts Center Lou Ziegler and I were moving boxes from his studio into my car when a neighbor who had been watching us approached. Will this building end up like that one, he asked, pointing to the excavation for the new parking garage next door. Probably, I said; it has 'demolition' written all over it.
They can't demolish it, said Lou, it's on the National Historic Register.
Either way it's our baby now, I told the neighbor. It belongs to the taxpayers -- you and me.
Theater of the Seventh Sister has re-invented itself many times, always emerging even better than before. Still, watching the Stahr Performing Arts Center go dark is hard. The theater's presence on North Queen Street -- and its satellite art studios and community groups -- will be missed.
